Oakland assigns double duty for Army base
by Becky Brun - 4.15.08

Thirteen developers, including Catellus Development Corp., Federal Development LLC, First Industrial Realty Trust Inc. and Jones Development Co., are vying for a contract to redevelop 108 acres on a former West Oakland Army base.

The Oakland Redevelopment Agency, which owns the former base, is overseeing a master redevelopment plan of the 170-acre base that will be known as the Gateway Development Area. Located near the Port of Oakland, the city plans to include maritime services and an auto mall in the redevelopment.

A ProLogis company, Catellus is working on a mixed-use development on a former Navy base in Alameda, Calif. The project, dubbed Alameda Landing, is a 97-acre, mixed-use development that includes new housing as well as office and retail space. Catellus is aiming for certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND).

The base closed in the late 90s and was transferred to the Oakland Redevelopment Agency in 2006. Staff at the city agency plans to review the proposals over the next three months, and choose a firm by the summer of 2008, according to a news release.
