Summary

This course confronts the paradox of economic growth on a planet with limited resources. The economy is revealed at multiple scales, from a single transaction to international capital flows, and analyzed for its potential to deliver increasing value while maintaining ecosystem health and resource abundance. The benefits and limitations of popular methodologies for measuring value are explored at each scale.

This context sets the stage for the practice of economic development and local examples of work in public, private and philanthropic sectors that further economic development. Viewing the economy as a complex system highlights the interdependence of its component parts and its multiple stakeholders. Strategies for intervention in the system are identified, with a focus on integrating social and ecological outcomes.
