RATING: The quote by Senator Barack Obama on page 7 says much about Green Business Basics by Nick Dallas, part of the “Mighty Manager” series. “Not only is it real, it’s here,” Obama says about climate change, “and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster.”

Inspiring words, but it is followed by a half page of white space. Two of the next four pages following the quote are taken up by cartoons. Although an established genre of instructional books such as (and I cringe even voicing these to myself) the “For Dummies” and “The Idiot’s Guide” series, have been quite successful, no manager who depends on Dallas’s so-called lessons is likely to turn out very mighty. Certainly to the author’s credit, there is a concise grouping of 24 small lessons with just a few paragraphs of summary information that gets quickly to the point. “Nuclear power is problematic,” warns one lesson. “Government has a leading role to play,” Dallas later writes hopefully. Even so, this is the kind of book on global warming better- suited for the real novice: not for a CEO or even a manager who even loosely follows climate change news. Published by McGraw-Hill
