RATING: Gabriel is certainly a believer in “destiny”: Six of the eight chapters in his book have the word in their title. “Visions for a Sustainable Energy Future” looks at the transformation from a variety of perspectives, from changing demographics to the developing market for carbon trading. Gabriel delves into the effects of deregulation on the energy market, both in terms of opportunity and as somewhat of a cautionary tale. He’s frank that the public is misinformed in its belief that deregulation drives prices down. As utilities face pressures from Wall Street to provide double-digit returns on investment, Gabriel raises the question: Is that the right motivation to create a more efficient energy supply system in America?

Gabriel draws from experience in both the R&D and sales sides of the energy market. Issues such as intelligent electricity-grid metering get top billing as part of a broader call for better-performing electrical infrastructure. Gabriel also takes a pragmatic view of technologies such as nuclear and “clean coal” while offering fact-based ideas about the role alternative energies can take in the decades ahead.
Ultimately, his message isn’t that different from what others are saying: Massive change is coming with both confusion and opportunity. Gabriel also doesn’t do much to enliven what can be dry technological and business minutiae. Even so, the author brings a rare blend of experience and makes a strong case for realistic change that can ease the uncertainty of a transforming market and society. Published by The Fairmont Press
