Big benefits for public education
By their very nature, B Corporations are dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Today, there are more than 600 Certified B Corporations from 60 industries, and that number continues to grow as entrepreneurs discover the dynamic opportunities in driving profitability while advancing social good. Imagine the possibilities when companies with similar charters partner to not only grow their market share but align to make a difference.
That’s the case with Education Funding Partners and Better World Books – both B Corporations. Founded in 2010, Education Funding Partners is a K-12 education support firm that connects brands to school districts to create sustainable funding solutions for public schools nationwide. Since 2002, Better World Books has collected and sold books to promote literacy. Social and environmental responsibility is at the core of its business.
As both companies share a similar vision, Education Funding Partners matched Better World Books to Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland based on their mutual objectives. Through the partnership, the school district has placed Better World Book collection boxes at 32 initial school locations. Anne Arundel students and their families drop off used books in the collection boxes – and Better World Books will collect, sort and sell as many books as possible. The company then returns a percentage of its net sales from books sold to the district.
“Better World Books uses the power of business to change the world. We collect and sell books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide,” said Dustin Holland, Vice President of Better World Books. “As a fellow B Corporation, Education Funding Partners understands our vision and knows the exact type of school district partner we seek. This ground-breaking agreement gives students and families the opportunity to donate books that we can re-sell to make a difference in their own school district.”

This seems like a fantastic idea and fairly easy to implement. Schools need to figure out alternative ways to raise funds to support their academic programs in these tough economic times. I have passed this article along to our school librarian and hope we will soon see a Better World Books collection box on our local high school campus!
Dawn, thanks for spreading the word! In case this helps, you or your school librarian can get more info about our book drop boxes here: http://www.betterworldbooks.com/go/dropbox
